Rufus:

I started to write my Dream Requiem in 2020 during Covid when California was ravaged by wildfires. The recording of the world premiere in Paris from June of last year comes out now at exactly the same time that my beloved city, Los Angeles, is suffering from the worst wildfires in its history. Byron's poem Darkness, which weaves through the piece, was written after the largest volcano explosion in history (to this day) that darkened the skies globally. It is a powerful statement about complete ecological collapse and disaster that today seems closer and more threatening than ever before.
The Offertorium which accompanies these images of absolute devastation here in Los Angeles is the movement in the mass where the community comes together and takes the Holy Communion re-enacting the Last Supper. It symbolizes death and resurrection, the eternal natural circle of decay and growth.
It has been strange touring in Australia while my hometown is on fire. Jorn is in Los Angeles, and everything is fine with our house and our lives, but so many have lost their homes and will now struggle to rebuild their existence.
