"It's a mix of rock, country and Americana, and Harvest Sun does it to perfection!" exclaimed the reviewer in English Nordic Music Central earlier this year, when the Swedish band Harvest Sun released the single Cover up the tracks.
The song is included in the tracks as the band now collects all their latest single releases on their new EP Lost and found – where they also add a new acoustic version of the song as a bonus track.
Harvest Sun comes from northern Sweden and maintains a musical tradition that is typically defined in the USA as heartland rock – melodic, guitar-based rock with its roots deeply embedded in both rock and Americana, often characterised by a conviction that rock music serves a social or communal purpose beyond mere entertainment. Among the genre's leading representatives – and sources of inspiration and role models for the band – are Steve Earle, the Eagles, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, but also artists and bands such as John Mellencamp and Drive-By Truckers.
Harvest Sun was formed 26 years ago, when singer, guitarist, and songwriter Johan Nordström gathered some talented musicians around him to record songs that he had written during a tour around Sweden with the legendary Sigge Hill's band. Harvest Sun made their debut in 2000 with the EP On The Run. It then took a full 14 years before they released the album Dead Man's Town. In 2017-18, a series of singles were released, and in 2021, they were signed by the Swedish music label COMEDIA, which released the single Travel through time. After another hiatus, the band returned last fall with the single Long way down, which was followed up earlier this year by Fragile substance of the soul and Cover up the tracks - all singles are of course included in the tracks on Harvest Sun's new EP - as well as a new acoustic version of the critically acclaimed Cover up the tracks.
“So it’s a mix of rock, country and Americana and Harvest Sun does it to perfection… More important though, is their approach to genuine songcraft with organic arrangements, where the human touch is obvious. Songs like this, especially those with titles like Cover up the tracks, often suggest road movies to me. This one rattles along at the pace of a surgical strike on an Iranian missile defence system as it runs every red light on Route 66, the cops in hot pursuit of Bonnie & Clyde or Thelma and Louise or whoever it is that’s fleeing something in their past in the vain hope that a miraculous future is going to get out of a cab at the next dinghy one-horse town motel they choose for their overnight stay.
“And there’s always some distraction/some trouble down the line
Waiting in the shadows all the time”
Perfect lines for a perfect pop song. And one that should be heard on Route 66 too.” Nordic Music Central (UK)
