Speaking on ‘Blue Caged Bird’, Emmeline says that “I'd just started working at my local record store when I started writing this song. One of my colleagues, Linus Barry, is the guitarist for the jazz group Oreglo, and also works at the shop with me. After realising there was some overlap in our music taste we hopped in the studio, started messing around with drum loops and guitar riffs. It was actually me spluttering into the mic that we ended up using for the start of our rhythm section, and quite quickly the melody came out of me. It's a song about freeing yourself from places and situations that restrict you, so it felt fitting that we made it in such a casual and uplifting way.”
