Onlangs las ik op een Facebook-bericht van iemand dat de huidige postpunkbeweging veel langer duurt dan de oorspronkelijke op het einde van de jaren 70. Heel juist, en laat ons daar maar zeer blij mee wezen. In België genieten we momenteel volop van de jonge helden Whispering Sons, in Duitsland staat Lebanon Hanover aan de top en in Turkije hebben ze zelfs She Past away. Ja, en zo kunnen we inderdaad wel een tijdje blijven voort gaan. Met Koban uit Canada bijvoorbeeld!

Dit duo uit Vancouver bracht drie jaar geleden op het cultlabel Weyrd Son een tamelijk fantastische ep uit (Vide), en nu is er de tweede cd, en wel op Avant!: het label dat reeds Dream Affair en Cult Of Youth uitbracht.

De muziek van Samuel Buss en Brittany West wordt gedomineerd door death rock-achtige gitaren en een ritmebox. Je zou het geluid gerust kunnen omschrijven als de ontbrekende schakel tussen Delta 5 en Bauhaus. Donker, maar tegelijkertijd ongelooflijk energiek!

Abject Obsessions telt tien songs, en ze zijn allen een bewijs dat er anno 2016 nog enorm goede muziek wordt gemaakt. Natuurlijk, wie twijfelde daar nu aan?

I recently read on a Facebook-message that the current post-punk movement lasts longer than the original one at the end of the 70s. Very true, and let us be happy with that. In Belgium we currently enjoy the talent of Whispering Sons, in Germany Lebanon Hanover is at the top and iTurkey even has She Past Away.

Yes, and we can go on for a while with that. For example, with Koban from Canada, for example! Three years ago, this duo from Vancouver released on the cult label Weyrd Son the fairly fantastic EP Vide, and now there is the second CD, released on Avant !: the label that brought you Dream Affair and Cult Of Youth.

The music of Samuel Buss and Brittany West is dominated by death rock-like guitars and a rhythm box. You could describe its sound as the missing link between Delta 5 and Bauhaus. Dark, but incredibly energetic!  

Abject Obsessions includes ten songs, and they are all a proof that there is still good music in the year 2016. Of course, who doubted that?
